What is a Full Stack Developer?

Full-stack developers are developers who are experienced in both client-side (front-end) and server-side (back-end) development.  Simply put, they are developers who can manage the full build of a website including the basics of:

  • HTML and CSS that make up the visible content.
  • JavaScript programming for interactive and dynamic client facing content.
  • Database programming and manipulation.
  • Server-side programming and frameworks.
  • Server and hosting set up.

The easiest way to summarise what a full-stack developer does is to break it down into front-end and back-end development, anto examine what each of these development types entail.

Front End Development

this is the visible part of a website, the part a user interacts via a browser or mobile app.  It includes the basic building blocks of using HTML & CSS combined with JavaScript to display the content of the website in an appropriate way.  A full-stack developer will possess the basic skills and knowledge of these frameworks.

For instance, VueJS and React are just two of many JavaScript frameworks and Bootstrap is a CSS framework.  A qualified full-stack developer will likely be familiar with a number of frameworks for all areas of front-end website development.

Back End Development

conversely to front-end development this is the non-visible, behind the scenes work that makes websites work.  The more complex the website the more back-end work is required.

Back-end development includes understanding and working with server environments, databases, additional back-end languages and frameworks to power the website functionality beyond a static brochure site.

Full Stack Development

Full-stack developers are experts in both the font and back end of a website, this means they need to be proficient in the languages and frameworks encompassed by both. What’s more, they need to have an in-depth understanding of services, networks and hosting environments.

The full list of skills required by Full Stackers can be found on the w3schools website.

With a vast array of technologies and languages in use today,  true full stack developers are in high demand but with such an array of technologies for each part of the build how can one developer truly be full-stack?

There are some versions of full-stack that can identify the best skill sets for a project based on the developers tech stack experience and expertise.

Some of the more common stacks are:

  • LAMP: JavaScript - Linux - Apache - MySQL - PHP
  • LEMP: JavaScript - Linux - Nginx - MySQL - PHP
  • MEAN: JavaScript - MongoDB - Express - AngularJS - Node.js
  • Django: JavaScript - Python - Django - MySQL
  • Ruby on Rails: JavaScript - Ruby - SQLite – Rails.

Some developers will only work with their chosen tech stack which means the requirement of the project will help decide the skills required by the developer.
