What is Angular?

Angular is a Google backed open-source web application framework. It is not a programming language but rather a framework that developers use to create applications for use on desktop, mobile devices and web applications.

The framework is considered a front-end development tool and is often compared to its close competitor React.  While these tools are similar, there are key differences between them which makes one or the other more suited for a project. While this article focuses on Angular in particular, you can learn more about React here.

Angular is a popular framework when creating dynamic web apps, in the last StackOverflow survey it was positioned 4th in the most popular frameworks used by developers. It is particularly suited for developing single page applications (SPA’s) that are lightweight and fast.

.Angular is not to be confused with AngularJS, the frameworks predecessor. Today Angular extends far beyond being a JavaScript(JS) framework.  The framework uses Microsoft Typescript as the main language for development allowing for the creation of apps using HTML and other languages.  Typescript is an extension of JavaScript and actually converts to JS, meaning it runs anywhere JavaScript can run, such as web browsers or directly in apps.

A brief history of Angular

Developed in 2009, AngularJS began as a project at Google. In 2014, with the development of version 2 of the framework, the project split into AngularJS (version 1) and Angular (version 2 onwards).  Although it was controversial in the developer community, version 2 was released in September 2016 as Angular.

It is currently maintained by Google and has an average of 2 new releases per year. As of June 2022 it is at version 14.  Other than Google  there are a number of notable organisations and services that also use Angular as their development framework adding credence to its already strong pedigree

Angular users include

  • Gmail
  • CloudFlare
  • Paypal
  • Upwork
  • The Guardian
  • Weather.com
  • Forbes
  • and many others

Each of these enterprise level businesses use Angular extensively to dynamically update apps, without the need to refresh pages.

Why Use Angular

Angular is a popular and powerful framework and is used by a large cross section of businesses in various market sectors.  The framework is a great option for high performance and cross platform apps, especially when a mix of tech stacks are being used in a project.

There are lots of reasons to use Angular. We’ve listed a few of reasons, most commonly cited by developer and project managers below.

Security

Angular is considered a very secure framework. With 2 new releases a year from Google’s engineers, and a consistent schedule of updates, bugs and security vulnerabilities are quickly addressed. Angular is also supported by a huge open-source community who give further assistance for keeping the framework secure. You can read more about Angular security here and Google’s approach to security here.

What's more, the programming language used by Angular, TypeScript, is supported by a second software giant, Microsoft. This means every component of the framework has great documentation and version control.

Speed

Like many other frameworks, Angular offers great performance and fast app creation. In common with other front-end frameworks, Angular allows developers to create dynamic interfaces, without needing to reload full pages. This means users can make changes and interact with a page much faster. This is especially useful for apps with sales funnels of ecommerce functionality, as faster pages often help keep users happy.

Angular’s back end is also known for its speed. The framework supports a “model – view – controller” architecture (MVC) which developers use to write short but effective code directly into Angular, which can help reduce coding them, and create a more effective structure for revisions. This makes app creation speedy and efficient.

Flexibility

Angular offer’s flexibility, giving developers the ability to use HTML for the user interface (UI) instead of JavaScript.  The way TypeScript interacts with HTML allows developers to avoid JavaScript, and edit pages without any loss of functionality.

Additionally the framework is cross platform, meaning no matter what device the app or software will be used on, it can be run within Angular for testing.

This includes:

  • Mobile Native Apps
  • Progressive Web Apps
  • Single Page Apps
  • Desktop Apps

This flexibility extends to integrations with other frameworks meaning that integration of 3rd party features is simple.  Angular has fully integrated competent libraries with other frameworks, and can integrate with them smoothly. 3rd party frameworks include:

Angular is Cross Platform

As mentioned previously Angular is a cross-platform framework. This means, software applications developed using the framework can be run on multiple different platforms.

Today, many software development projects demand native apps. With the help of Angular, a developer can create apps which are native-like from a single codebase. Due to the framework's ability to emulate true native app function and performance, it is an attractive solution for this type of project.

Cost Savings

Using a single codebase to create multiple versions of an app creates a cost effective app development process. By  using Angular, businesses can remove the need to work with multiple developers, who are each in charge of building separate native apps.

Angular's speed also adds to its cost effectiveness. With the help of component libraries, and integrations, the framework can create high quality apps quickly, without having to develop new components one by one. This means many apps can be completed using pre-existing components for multiple libraries, making angular development quicker, and therefore less expensive.

A further benefit of Angular, is the ability to easily test code within the framework itself. Testing features is important when delivering digital products, as it helps avoid issues further down the project delivery roadmap. Being able to test directly within the framework reduces the chances of bugs causing issues further down the line of project delivery, ultimately helping teams save money.

Angular is also scalable and well suited to high performance requirements. The framework allows apps of all kinds to be built within it, from simple single page web applications to enterprise apps that have multiple input sources. This makes Angular a great option for anyone who wants to avoid migrating from one framework to another as their business scales, and ultimately save on development costs.

Accessibility

In today's connected world accessibility standards are important.  Angular meets comprehensive accessibility requirements “out of the box”, full details can be found at the official Angular website; https://angular.io/guide/accessibility

Why Hire Angular Developers

As with most techstacks, finding a suitable developer for a project, who is skilled in the required frameworks will give you the best possible return on investment (ROI).  Regardless of how easy a technology is to learn and use, there are always variables and oddities that only experienced developers will be able to successfully navigate.

This is especially important when it comes to Angular. Since it is not just another JavaScript(JS) framework, and uses TypeScript to extend JS further, its functionality varies greatly. Hiring a non-specific developer is not a cost effective solution for Angular projects, as the framework has a steep learning curve.

The complexity of Angular means that if you want to use the framework to develop an app, an Angular experienced developer is your only option. Only a skilled and accredited developer will be able to leverage the framework to create complex and powerful apps, which run well and give you access to maximum functionality.

Finding the right certified Angular developer makes it easy to build a long-term relationship with an expert who can effectively deliver an ambitious roadmap.  That same expert will also be able to ensure that your projects are delivered on time, and at the estimated cost.

With prior understanding of Angular and an ability to work with the framework, a developer will be able to provide more accurate insight into how challenging, time consuming or costly a project will be.  Additionally, their expertise will prove invaluable post launch.
