What is .NET
.NET is an open source software developer platform developed and supported by Microsoft. It includes a complete set of tools for building, deploying, and managing applications and services.
.NET is a mature platform which has been around since the early 2000s. Originally known as .NET frameworks, the system was renamed in 2016, when a new cross platform version of the open-source framework was created.
Prior to the release of .NET Core (not simplified to .NET) developers were limited to developing for the Windows environment. With the 2016 version of the techstack, developers could now develop cross platform not only for Windows and Linxus, but also macOS and Docker.
With the releases of .NET core the platform also became truly open-source for the first time. Today, the software is supported by thousands of developers in an official .NET community and in other online places such as StackOverflow.
Today .NET is at version 5, it is a modern development framework that is used extensively to create applications far beyond the web, it is used to create applications across many platforms including:
- Web Apps & Services
- Native Mobile Apps for Windows, Android & iOS
- Desktop Apps for Windows & macOS
- Deploying Cloud Apps
- Game Development
- Internet of Things
- Docker Microservices
- Apps with Machine Learning
Some people criticise .NET, suggesting it is archaic and old fashioned. However, this is often seen as a misconception due to the product’s maturity and the fact that the C# & F# languages have been around a long time. In fact this maturity makes the language capable, robust and stable.
Version 6 was released in November 2021 alongside the accompanying Integrated Development Environment (IDE) Visual Studio 2022. The .NET ecosystem is actively supported by Microsoft and the open source community of developers, amounting in millions of developers contributing and building apps.
The software is loved by developers around the world and according to StackOverflow in a 2021 developer survey it was the 5th most popular web framework. The survey places it squarely as the most popular framework used outside of web development, and shows Visual Studio to be the most popular coding IDE by a huge margin - with over 70% of respondents naming it number one with second place only having 30% approval.
Beyond the stats and figures, showing that .NET is incredibly popular, there are also a number of key benefits highlighted by users.
.NET provides a consistent programming framework & environment for creating applications and services that can be accessed from a variety of devices, including personal computers, tablets, and smartphones. It also enables developers to create reusable components that can be shared across multiple applications.
The survey mentioned above shows .NET being the most loved framework & library further enhancing its reputation for usability.
Productivity is often the most cited reason for businesses using .NET development.
One of the most mentioned benefits to businesses using .NET for development is productivity. Using modern language, extensive libraries, common API’s and the power of Visual Studio means building fully featured, high quality applications is sped up. It is in fact considered the most productive environment for developers, by developers.
.NET’s cross platform nature allows you to create software, native mobile apps, websites, server applications and cloud services all within a single framework. With the ability to create any application for any operating system, using reusable skills and codes, .NET provides a cost-effective solution.
A skilled developer can quickly create new software for any platform using .NET’s familiar environment.
According to TechEmpower’s benchmark, .NET is a fast framework, beating many popular alternatives. .NET applications use less computing power and have fast response times.
.NET is very scalable, due to the ecosystem built around it. The software allows for incorporating libraries from external sources and gives access to its own native library which is used by 5 million developers worldwide, which can be leveraged to overcome any new challenges.
Whatever issue arises when using .NET, there is likely an existing solution available.
Like many other open-source projects, support from a community of developers means .NET is stable, secure and continually being improved.
The community is also good at flagging up potential bugs and security issues, which helps prevent threats and issues. .NET also benefits from more than just the generic open source positives, as it is continually supported and developed by Microsoft engineers. What’s more, it has support from developers in over 3700 companies outside of Microsoft.
.NET developers design and develop software and other applications that use the .NET platform and framework, using the Microsoft Visual Studio IDE, which provides the necessary tools for creating, debugging, and deploying applications.
A skilled and accredited .NET developer is fluent in coding with the required and supported .NET languages C#, F# and Visual Basic. While other object orientated programming (OOP) developers will find these languages familiar, they will not be competent enough to develop successful .NET projects.
A fully vetted and certified .NET developer provides additional value to projects by leveraging the full power of .NET. Highly skilled, experienced developers are able to ensure that the build and management of software applications for any platform runs smoothly and effectively. This ensures you can get outstanding results at the end of your project regardless of any dependencies and integrations required.
The same expert can also help overcome many project management challenges. By fully understanding the software in use and the desired deliverables, they can help predict, more accurately, how challenging, time consuming and constantly a project will be.
In order to ensure a successful outcome for your .NET project it's important to work with a developer who is fully versed in the framework, it’s libraries and nuances. These skills are difficult to find, if you are looking to hire someone who is not directly familiar with .NET’s skill set.
